Ministry Internship

The University Ministry Internship is a formation program to accompany students on their faith journey while they serve peers in a specific area of ministry and work. Interns will:

  • Attend and facilitate University Ministry events and programs
  • Facilitate the First Year Retreat
  • Attend bi-weekly community formation sessions (includes retreat and days of reflection)
  • Meet bi-weekly with a staff mentor
  • Collaboratively create and implement a sustainable mission project
  • Receive a $750 stipend per semester

Ideal candidates are responsible, engaged on campus and interested in exploring and deepening their spirituality. Each applicant must have a reference and is responsible for sending the reference form to the ministry office.

    Social Media and Marketing Intern

    Role Summary 

    As the intern for Social Media and Marketing, you will assist the University Ministry Team in planning out, creating, and generating social media content and marketing for the 2023-2024 academic year. This includes helping to create a social media plan, attending large ministry events to capture content, organizing a schedule for marketing and assisting in developing the University Ministry brand. The intern will report to the Faith Formation Minister (Anna). The intern is responsible for assistance in the following areas: Planning, creating, recruiting, and advertising for University Ministry Programs. 

    Expectations 

    • Fulfill roles as stated in the intern roles and action plans 
    • Complete the 12-month internship program  
    • Exemplify a Spiritually developing lifestyle in action, integrity, and communication  
    • Strive to be prompt and exemplify good time management skills 

    Weekly Outlook and Action Plan 

    The weekly outlook and action plan will coincide with the areas of ministry, special events, and community outreach projects that are developed by the Faith Formation Minister and other members of the University Ministry Team.  

    Weekly Responsibilities: 

    • Schedule bi-weekly check-in time with supervisor to establish clear tasks lists and projects 
    • Schedule 3 hours of in office work per week  
    • Work on projects and tasks in the office  
    • Offer hospitality to visitors to the office

    Spiritual Formation Intern

    Role Summary 

    As the intern for Spiritual Formation Programs, you will assist the University Ministry Team in planning, coordinating, and advertising spiritual formation programs offered during the 2023-2024 academic year. This includes retreat programs, small faith sharing groups, interfaith programs, and liturgical events. The intern will report to the Faith Formation Minister (Anna). The intern is responsible for assistance in the following areas: Planning, creating, recruiting, and advertising for spiritual formation programs.

    Social Events Planning Intern

    Role Summary 

    As the intern for Event Planning, you will assist the University Ministry Team in planning, coordinating, and advertising for programs designed for building community and spaces of belonging offered during the 2023-2024 academic year. This includes socials events, annual Halloween party, movie nights, De-stress fest, and other programs to be held on and off-campus. The intern will report to the Faith Formation Minister (Anna). The intern is responsible for assistance in the following areas: Planning, creating, recruiting, and advertising for social programs.  

    Expectations

    • Complete the 12-month internship program  
    • Exemplify a Spiritually developing lifestyle in action, integrity, and communication

Work Study Opportunities

University Ministry offers a number of Work Study positions. If you qualify for Federal Work Study through financial aid you are eligible to work in the University Ministry Office. 

University Ministry Work Study students assist the full-time staff on projects, offer hospitality to fellow students, faculty, and staff as well as visitors, and help with administrative tasks around the office. The Work Study position is a great opportunity for students to get connected to the Detroit Mercy community while helping finance their studies.

    Other Leadership Opportunities

    • First Year Retreat – Plan and lead the retreat for first year students.
    • Immersion Trips – Plan and facilitate a week of direct service rooted in relationship during winter, spring, or summer break.  Do the works of mercy, enter a new reality, reflect, build community.
    • Ignatian Family Teach-In – Plan and lead a weekend in Washington, D.C. exploring issues of social justice and advocacy.
    • Christian Life Communities – Lead a weekly small faith-sharing groups.
    • Retreats – Plan and lead weekends away from school to build friendships and reflect on spirituality.

Liturgical Ministry

Liturgical Ministry

Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist

Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist assist the priest in distributing the Body and Blood of Christ during the 9 p.m. Mass. Students who wish to participate in this ministry should contact University Ministry to schedule a training.

Lectors

Lectors proclaim the first and second readings during the 9 p.m. Mass. Students who wish to participate in this ministry should contact University Ministry to schedule a training.

Sacristans

Sacristans set up for the 9:00 p.m. Mass, assist the priest during the Mass and clean up after the Mass. The sacristan is a Ministry Leadership position. Students who wish to participate in this ministry should apply to be a Ministry Leader in March.

Music Ministry

Music Ministry

Music Ministry meets for rehearsal every Sunday at 8 p.m. before the weekly 9 p.m. student Mass. Director Dan Greig welcomes singers and instrumentalists of all kinds.  Music reading skills are helpful but NOT required.
